Blok Designs is an innovative landscape design studio, committed to design and operational excellence. Under the leadership of Southern Africa’s pioneer of garden design, Jan Blok, we have over 25 years’ experience in the industry and have worked on projects both internationally and at home in South Africa.
Our portfolio of work includes residential and commercial gardens, developments, wine farms and institutional landscapes, and we offer a range of services from full project management and the development of garden styling concepts to interior design. Originality and quality are hallmarks of every project that we set our minds to, and our focus is on creating unique and exceptional spaces tailored specifically to each client.
We are committed to creating landscapes using methods and ideas derived from sustainability, with practices that have come from years of expertise. We also work in collaboration with many industry experts in order to integrate natural systems into our designed landscapes.
Jan received the SALI Award of Excellence for 9 consecutive years (2002 to 2010) and we are exceptionally proud to hold the record for the most received Trophy Awards. His work with Boschendal Wine Estate in the Cape Winelands, and his distinctive use of agri-landscaping techniques has transformed the farm into one of the most prestigious, and beautiful, in the country.
Jan is a forerunner of landscape design in Southern Africa, and a pioneer of innovative and unique garden design. Known for his innate sense of space and proportion, as well as an intuitive understanding of natural landscapes and sustainable techniques, Jan’s designs are distinctive, carefully-crafted to each client and of a timeless quality.
After he obtained his National Horticulture Diploma at the Durban campus of the (then) Technikon Natal, Jan worked in the cut-flower industry in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal and later, in the Netherlands. Upon his return to South Africa, he pursued his passion for garden design and, in 1995, founded Blok Designs. Jan was a Principal Member of SALI (South African Landscapers Institute), and previously the Chairman of Natal and the National Chairman of SALI.
Jan’s designs have a broad appeal and his client base extends to Europe, with regular features in local and international media. Amongst his many private clients, his portfolio in South Africa includes the Drostdy Hotel in Graaf Reinet and a lodge in Kruger National Park. One of Jan’s most notable projects in recent years has been the rejuvenation of Boschendal Wine Estate in the Cape Winelands. His use of agri-landscaping, an innovative, sustainable technique that elegantly integrates agricultural harvests and revenues into beautiful landscapes, set the path for the farm’s rejuvenation and today, it is one of the most beautiful and celebrated estates in the country.
Jan has won top National Awards for Best In House Design, and Construction in Landscape for nine years in a row, was lauded with 42 Gold Awards for projects from SALI over 10 years, and in 2009 published his book, “A Sense of Space,” which has currently sold out of 5000 copies.
