Every project we undertake is characterised by originality and quality, and our focus is on creating distinctive spaces customised to meet each client’s needs.
Jan is a trailblazer in landscape design in South Africa. He is known for his distinctive garden designs that showcase an innate sense of space and proportion, along with an intuitive understanding of natural landscapes and sustainable techniques. His carefully crafted designs are tailored for each client and possess a timeless quality.
After completing his National Horticulture Diploma at the Durban campus of (then) Technikon Natal, Jan worked in the cut-flower industry in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal and later in the Netherlands. Upon returning to South Africa, he pursued his passion for garden design and, in 1995, founded Blok Designs. Jan was a Principal Member of SALI (South African Landscapers Institute) and previously served as the Chairman of Natal and the National Chairman of SALI.
Jan’s client base extends to Europe and South Africa, with many of his gardens appearing in local and international media. Amongst his ma/ny private clients, his portfolio in South Africa includes the Drostdy Hotel in Graaf Reinet, a lodge and properties in the Kruger National Park, Boschendal and Laborie Wine Estate, to name a few.
Jan received the SALI Trophy for Best Inhouse Design and Construction for nine consecutive years (2002 to 2010), and we are exceptionally proud to hold the record for the most received Gold Awards. In 2009, he published his book, “A Sense of Space,” which has currently sold out of 5000 copies.
